Is anyone among you sick?  Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.   ~ James 5:14

Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of healing that the faithful may receive when experiencing serious illness or the effects of old age, or when nearing the end of their earthly life.  This sacrament confers a special grace which unites the sick person more intimately to the Passion of Christ for his good and for the good of all the Church.  It gives comfort, peace, courage, and even the forgiveness of sins if the sick person is not able to make a sacramental confession.
