Watch the Homily

Listen to the Homily

Discover the powerful meaning of the Road to Emmaus and how Jesus reveals Himself in the Eucharist. This reflection connects Scripture, the Mass, and real-life transformation through God’s mercy and grace.

Read the Homily

One of the most ironic moments in the Gospels occurs during the resurrection appearance of Jesus to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

These disciples, walking seven miles in sorrow and confusion, were discussing the shocking events of Jesus’ suffering and death—the one they had hoped would redeem Israel. As they walked, Jesus Himself approached and asked what they were discussing.

Then comes the irony:
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place in these days?”

The one they questioned was the only person who fully understood what had happened.

Scripture tells us their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. A kind of divine veil kept them from seeing the truth right in front of them.

As they walked, Jesus opened the Scriptures to them—explaining how everything pointed to Him. This becomes what we might call the first “Liturgy of the Word,” a journey through salvation history.

When they reached Emmaus, Jesus appeared ready to continue on, waiting for an invitation. They urged Him, “Stay with us.”

At table, He took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them.

In that moment—the breaking of the bread—their eyes were opened.

They recognized Him.

And He vanished.

Not because He left—but because He revealed how He would remain: in the Eucharist.

From that moment forward, Jesus would no longer be limited to one place. He would be present wherever the breaking of the bread occurs—across time, across the world—even here and now.

The disciples reflected:
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way?”

This is the same encounter we are invited into at every Mass—where Scripture is opened and Christ is made present in the Eucharist.

We experience those moments when truth pierces the heart, when grace moves us, when we encounter something beyond ourselves.

That is Christ.

And like the disciples, we are sent out—to share what we have experienced.

This same transformation is still happening today.

A recent convert shared how, in a moment of deep despair, he encountered a quiet but powerful presence urging him toward life. That moment became the beginning of his journey back to Christ.

Through prayer, community, and Eucharistic Adoration, he encountered healing, mercy, and a love that changed everything.

His story is a reminder:

No matter how far we’ve gone, Christ is always near.

Even when we don’t recognize Him.

Jesus makes Himself known to us in the breaking of the bread. He feeds us with His very life and strengthens us with grace.

And then He sends us out—to bring that same hope to a world in need.
