Jesus curses the fig tree, teaches about faith and authority, and reveals God’s call to genuine repentance and obedience.
In Episode 42 of our study of the Gospel of Matthew, we examine Matthew 21:14-32 as Jesus continues teaching during His final week in Jerusalem. A major focus of this episode is the mysterious withering of the fig tree. What did this symbolic act mean, and why did Jesus perform it? We explore the rich Old Testament background, including important connections to the prophet Jeremiah, to understand how the fig tree represents Israel’s spiritual condition and God’s call to bear authentic fruit. The passage also includes Jesus’ teaching on faith-filled prayer, His authority being questioned by the religious leaders, and the Parable of the Two Sons, emphasizing that true obedience is demonstrated through faithful action rather than empty words.
